About

An virtual AR gallery to empower the local artists in Pittsburgh, along with an engaging viewer experience

For more information, please check our website, and slide deck.

Role

Overview

- Location

We aim to establish the gallery in the Pop District, specifically centered at the Andy Warhol Museum, aligning with the client's proposal. This location, known for its artistic significance, serves as a natural hub for art

However, the Andy Warhol Museum imposes charges on the audience, creating a financial barrier for both attendees and artists. This poses a challenge, particularly for marginalized artists who may face difficulty accessing the public

- Stakeholders

stakeholder1.png
stakeholder1.png

In the USA, over 5 million artists face a scarcity of exhibition spaces, limiting their opportunities. Despite a large audience, the available venues are restricted.

In response, we aspire to develop a user-friendly tool that transcends realities, making art more accessible to the public. This initiative seeks to overcome barriers and provide a platform for artists to showcase their work without financial constraints

How might we help artists (especially marginalized) and audience easily access to each other?

Research

- Research Goals

(a )Understand the format and platform of existing virtual galleries

(b) Explore the strengths/limitations of current virtual galleries
(c) Identify the general expectations and needs of the marginalized artists
(d) Analyze how the artists envision a virtual gallery

- Competitor Analysis

Among all the competitors we found, most are based on AR/ VR/ webGL. The AR ones are the most achievable and immersive.

User Research

We managed to recruit three local marginalized artists to participate in the research activity.

After guiding them to explore the physical space of the Pop District, we prompted them to consider how XR technology could support communal enjoyment of art including theirs

- Prototype

For our lo-fi prototype, we mainly focused on the layout and flow of artist-end, and we conducted 3 usability tests with our three artists through lo-fi to mid-fi

- Usability Test Insights

(a) Allow more detailed artwork info

Artists care if the audience can reach out to them properly and efficiently by checking their personal website, etc
